Cycles Strand render is slow in GPU, its under development, for now CPU works better.

Anandha, THANK YOU for keeping these updated and getting them faster and faster.
Once you start doing character hair in Cycles, it becomes addictive.
Here's looking forward to the day when Cycles hair becomes a standard feature in Blender.
And, thanks again for making that day come a little soon here on the bleeding edge.
